What Does Ectropion Eye Look Like? - Consultants in Ophthalmic and Facial Plastic Surgery

Ectropion is a condition that turns your eyelid outwards. Ectropion usually affects the lower eyelid and creates a drooping effect, leaving the eye exposed and making it harder to blink. It can irritate the eye due to excessive dryness or tearing. Ectropion can prevent the eyelid from closing completely, resulting in irritated and sore eyelids. It can cause itching, crusting, burning, and blurred vision.

What Causes Ectropion Eye?

Sagging skin and weakening muscles due to aging are the most common causes of ectropion eye. Over time, collagen and elastic fibers weaken in the eyelids. Patients who have had eye surgeries in the past are more likely to develop ectropion eye later on in life. It can also be caused by scarring, infections, injuries, nerve damage, stroked, tumors, or masses. Excessively rubbing your eyes, smoking, or spending too much time in the sun can all contribute to ectropion eye and cause eyelid tissue to loosen.
