ACGME & ASOPRS Fellowships

American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS - Even Year)

Fellowship Program - Position Starting July 2024

Program Description

Consultants in Ophthalmic and Facial Plastic Surgery, along with Detroit Medical Center, and Wayne State University’s Kresge Eye Institute sponsor an oculofacial plastic surgery fellowship which fulfills the requirements of, and has been approved by, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Each fellowship is for a training period of two-years. The fellowship prepares fellows for a career encompassing all aspects of oculofacial plastic surgery, including:

  • Cosmetic and functional eyelid surgery
  • Aesthetic oculofacial plastic surgery
    • Endoscopic forehead lifting
    • Mid-face lifting
    • Lower eyelid blepharoplasty
  • Lacrimal surgery
  • Orbital surgery
  • Post-Mohs reconstructions
  • Socket reconstruction
  • Botulinum toxin
  • Soft tissue fillers
  • Minimally invasive facial procedures
  • Pediatric oculoplastic surgery
  • Thyroid eye disease

Broad Training Experience

Fellows will gain comprehensive training in the clinical evaluation, surgical management, and pre- and postoperative care of patients with oculoplastic disorders. Our practice covers all of Southeast Michigan, and draws patients from throughout Michigan and Northwest Ohio, with destination patients coming from Indiana, Chicagoland, and across the U.S. Our fellows have access to multiple academic teaching hospitals, a major Children’s hospital, several large community hospitals, a Veteran’s Administration Hospital, as well as surgery centers.

Fellows will obtain exceptional training in the management of periocular cancer, eyelid malposition, lacrimal disorders, orbital disease (including a particularly robust thyroid eye disease experience), pediatric oculoplastics, trauma and the entire gamut of cosmetic oculoplastic procedures.

Research

The surgeons at COFPS all hold faculty appointments in local medical schools, teach medical students and residents, and pursue research projects. The research portfolio is heavy on clinical research, and a translational research lab is pending. The faculty publish regularly in major peer-reviewed journals as well as authoring chapters, surgical atlases, and several of the preeminent referenced textbooks in our field. Fellows will have excellent opportunities for research, and a strong publishable thesis is an expectation of our fellowships.
